We’ve known about Magic’s upcoming star trek set as part of its Universes Beyond lineup for a little while, but we now have more information about the set that’s set to boldly go where no set has gone before (or at least since Edge of Eternities).

While we’re expecting Commander precons to be popular, there’s a very, very good chance that the Collector Boosters will form something of a no-win situation – a Kobayashi Maru, of sorts.
That’s because they’re priced higher already, but are already being hoovered up by scalpers and sold at even higher prices — preventing genuine collectors from snagging them. Boo!
Thankfully, the Draft Night set offers a way to get one of your own; you’ll just need to move quickly to snag it, as this is now the only way we can get our hands on a Collector booster between now and release day.
Star Trek’s Draft Night Is Proving Popular Already
The set is designed to be opened for four players looking for a fast setup with a 40-card deck each.
“Start with three Play Boosters each. Open the first pack, pick two cards, and pass. Repeat with the remaining cards and packs. Construct a 40-card deck with your draft selections, adding any number of Basic Lands (we recommend 17).”
The box also includes one Collector Booster, which is basically the only way you’ll get the set’s rarest cards and alternative art treatments (hence why the pack on its own is $37.99).
“Your Collector Booster prize may include Collector Booster-exclusive card treatments and might even contain an ultra-rare Headliner card signed by Star Trek cast members.”
Still, the Draft Night is $119.99, so what else is there to drive up the value? There are also 12 Play Boosters, 90 basic land cards, and 10 double-sided token cards.
That might make this the easiest way to get a Collector Booster. And yes, it’s kind of gross that you’re having to spend $120 to have a greater chance of rare cards, but only you can decide if the value proposition is for you. Don’t shoot the messenger and all that.
What is a good deal, however, is on the Star Trek Commander Deck Bundle, currently up for preorder at $225. That’s $75 in savings compared to buying each deck individually, and definitely worth picking up while stock lasts.
