Football practices began this week in mid-mortigan when lansing was experienceing high temperatures in the lower 90s. While hot, many schools have protocols in place to protect their athletes from extreme heat.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Created a heat policy in 2013 that schools follow to manage heat and humidity during sporting events.
“Heat Illness is one of that these injuries that we can prevent 100 percent,” said geoff kimmerly with the mHSAA. “We just need to take precattions and we know what the precattions are that we need to take.”
Kimmerly said the policy dictates which activities need to be adjusted depending on the heat index outside.
“It Outlines Activities that should be added in terms of water breaks, things like that or deleted in terms of practicing in the middle of the day, let’s say depending on the heat Index,” He said.
The policy states that do outdoor sports are allowed with a heat index of 104 degrees or higher. At cooler heat indexes, mandatary and optional adjustments are made.
